The Write Now New Plays Competition and Workshop

The purpose of this biennial workshop is to encourage writers to create strikingly original scripts for young audiences. Playwrights from across the country are invited to submit scripts for review by a panel of peers.  All submitted scripts will receive constructive feedback at the request of the playwright.  At least four scripts will be selected as finalists to participate in the full workshop process, which includes a week on site at Indiana Repertory Theatre with a development team, followed by a reading of the script at the Write Now gathering (transportation, housing, and a cash prize will be provided to the finalists).  Semi-finalists will also be invited to read excerpts from their scripts at the Write Now gathering.

Script submissions for Write Now 2015 will begin in Spring, 2014.

Process

Once a playwright is chosen as a finalist, the process begins with interaction amongst the playwright, director and dramaturg prior to workshop.

While onsite at Indiana Repertory Theatre, the development teams will have a week of half-day work sessions with professional actors. Plays will be cast locally by IRT in accordance with recommendations by the playwright and director prior to the beginning of the workshop. Scripts will be shared with age-appropriate young people and community groups in the Indianapolis area who will be invited to meet with the playwrights during the workshop, attend selected rehearsals, and provide feedback at the final reading of the script.

Rehearsal, collaboration and opportunities for script revision will continue throughout the workshop prior to the rehearsed readings at Write Now.
